This Satoshi Okada designed home, situated in the foothills of Mt. Fuji, inspired my interest in architecture. This is due to its ability to present a minimalist aesthetic while maintaining a strong relationship with its surroundings, so that it subsequently functions as “a shadow in the forest”. The home is located in a ‘volcanic’ area, so the use of local Japanese cedar, stained black, as cladding, represents the colour of lava. It is because of this ‘nature-structure’ composite, and the fact the local materials have been used in its construction, that I've always found it to be such a significant piece of architecture.
